The workshop: unique pieces, made by hand
From the fragment picked up on the beach to the piece you wear: what “handmade” means at Éclat d’océan, and why no two pieces are ever the same.

“Unique pieces, handmade & shaped by the sea.” This line, at the top of the shop, sums up two hands at work: that of the sea, which shapes the glass over years, and the one that, in the workshop, turns it into a piece of jewellery. Here is what “handmade” covers, from the fragment to the finished piece.
It all begins with the fragment
An Éclat d’océan piece does not start from a drawing to be reproduced in series. It starts from a fragment of sea glass. Each one is collected by hand on beaches, with respect for the marine ecosystem, then chosen for its shape, its colour and its authenticity.
This choice is the workshop’s first gesture, and probably the most important. An elongated drop will call for an earring, a wider fragment will find its place at the centre of a necklace, a small rounded piece will settle on a ring. The material proposes, the jewel follows.
Recutting nothing
There is one rule we never bend: no piece of glass is recut or altered. No grinding to fit it to a setting, no polishing to give it back a shine it no longer has. The sea glass keeps exactly the shape and the frosted surface the sea gave it.
So the setting adapts to the fragment, not the other way round. It takes longer, and is sometimes more delicate, but it is the only way to celebrate the material as it is, without artifice.
Assembled by hand
Then comes the assembly. Depending on the design, the fragment is set, hung from a chain, paired with charms or combined with leaves and starfish. On the gold-tone Corallia pendant, the green sea glass is set with a gold-tone coral branch, a tribute to the sea floor. On the Celestun necklace, a drop of sea glass sits below a toggle clasp. On the Rincon earrings, three gold-tone leaves join the green of the fragment.
Each piece is patiently assembled by hand. As for metal, the sea glass is paired with stainless steel, silver tone or gold tone, chosen for its strength and how well it holds up every day.
Why no two pieces are ever the same
Because every fragment is unique, every piece is too. Two necklaces of the same design share a drawing, chains and charms, but not the same fragment: one will be a softer green, another slightly wider, a third will have a more irregular outline. This is what makes each creation authentic and a little different from its neighbour.
It is also why the piece you receive may differ slightly from the photograph in the shop. It is not a flaw: it is the mark of a piece made from a natural material that nobody tried to make uniform.
From the jewel to the box
The workshop’s work does not stop at the last ring closed. Every order is packed with care, in refined packaging, so that opening the parcel extends the attention given to the piece. Customers have thanked the shop for “the kind little note” and “the little extra touch” they found in their parcel.
What “handmade” means for you
Choosing a handmade piece means choosing something that took time: the time of the sea first, then that of the workshop. It also means accepting that it is unique, with its shades and irregularities, like a pebble you keep in your pocket after a walk.
To discover all the creations, visit the shop, collection by collection, and take the time to look closely at each fragment.
